The Chilean warship Esmeralda arrived in Shanghai at 1:30pm yesterday. It was the sixth time the warship visited the city. The Esmeralda will remain for five days before heading to New Caledonia in the South Pacific. A group of international school students went onboard to welcome the ship's crew. "There are two students in my class whose fathers were sailors," one teacher said. The captain, Antonio Idiaquez Bengoechea, said he was happy to visit the city for the first time. "Esmeralda will celebrate her 50th anniversary of the launch here on June 30," Bengoechea said. The last time Esmeralda visited the city was in August 2001. During the five-day visit, officers from the warship will visit several famous scenic spots. The Esmeralda is a naval training vessel that measures 113 meters long with a mast height of 48.5 meters. The ship has a crew of 324 - both men and women. Eleven crew members are from other countries such as South Korea, Japan and the United States. The Esmeralda will be open to the public on Thursday, according to the captain.
